Visit Museum

On November 22, 1937, as the Japanese Army advanced on Nanjing, Rabe, along with other foreign nationals, organized the International Committee and drew up the Nanjing Safety Zone to provide Chinese refugees with food and shelter upon the impending Japanese slaughter. He explained his reasons thus: "..there is a question of morality here.. I cannot bring myself for now to betray the trust these people have put in me, and it is touching to see how they believe in me." The zones were located in all of the foreign embassies and at Nanjing University. Rabe also opened up his properties to help 650 more refugees. The following massacre would kill hundreds of thousands of people, while Rabe and his zone administrators tried frantically to stop the atrocities. His attempts to appeal to the Japanese by using his Nazi membership credentials only delayed them; but that delay allowed hundreds of refugees to escape. In the documentary film Nanking it was said he was responsible for saving 250,000 Chinese civilians..(From Rabe’s dairy)
Today, I visit Rabe’s house at Xiao Fen Qiao. It is really hard for people to image how Rabe could keep brave and saved refugees as possible as he could. Rabe and her family were threatened and abused by japanese for several times to hand in the refugees to the japanese, but he kept his mind and never gave up saving human. I think we should learn something from Rabe which is we should always try our best to help people and never gave up the wishes, if Rabe was once afraid of the japanes and gave the refugees to the japanese, they must be killed very cruelly. And Rabe’s story also reminded me that if a country is not powerful enough, it would be too easy for other countries to invade. So we should study hard and work hard to build china into a strong and powerful country, and never let the historical tragedy happen again.
Rabe’s house was very beautiful for me as well; it is hard for me to believe if a citizen of Nanjing could live in such a kind of decorated place. Rabe could live in such a fantastic house because he is not only a Germany officer but also a representative of the Siemens Company which used to be the largest company in the world. I feel very glad to see the old buildings of Nanjing because it is very cultural and have great gardens; you can hardly find this kind of buildings in Nanjing. I think you should see some old buildings in Nanjing if you have free time.

Western food

I had dinner at Swiss restaurant at East shopping mall during 12a.m to 1a.m at 14th March’s afternoon. We had the dinner with the Danish students, and Joe helped me take the pictures. We had a great dinner there, Swiss food s were really delicious. I had a kind of spaghetti which made of potatoes, chess and bacons. It is really delicious and makes you satisfaction because of the chess in side of spaghetti. This spaghetti was made into the shape of a cube which would be really strange for Chinese because Chinese only have noodles instead. And we had a good time with the Danish students, they are very out-going which made me feel very comfortable, and some of them wear eardrop which is a little bit strange for us but they are really just nice person, they are much nicer than the exchange students we met last time. In the dinner time, they are willing to share some of their food with us, and this made me very bu hao yi si because I only bring little of money and can give them nothing. The foods there are all very delicious because of the cheese inside it which made it very delicious. I love the pizza which is ordered by Sylvia and James, it is really delicious and James and Sylvia Really can not eat it all, and they really did not want to dog pack it, so I finish the last piece of pizza for them. And the Danish students ordered a hotpot which mad by cheese, you could just put the thing you want to eat inside the hotpot and it will be covered by a thick layer of cheese. Though I had not eat this plate but I could still get the fantastic smelling of it from far away.
I had said that it is not only the foods but also the Danish students which made me enjoy the dinner, they are really nice person and they really know a lot. Most of them are bilingual speaker and some of them could even speak more. They also had been to a lot European countries which most of the Chinese could never be to. Their country also sounds very good because you can have medical treatment free in Denmark and you could also have education free at Denmark, China always have a difficult time with this social material benefits subject. And the greatest things of the Denmark is that they only need to have five or six classes a day which sounds so great to us because as you know we need to have about ten classes every day.
All good things must come to the end. When we finish the dinner, I had to say goodbye to them and Joe decided to take them to play soccer which is sound great. But I really had something important to finish and I did not have enough time to do it Sunday, so I said goodbye to them and took the subway to go back home.
